My plan was to take at least 1 day off work.... lol nope :] Everyone else got time off tho. Typical. I did take my wife to the beach for the first time in her life. She liked it a bunch. We only stayed for about 2 hour because the sun was just brutal. Yay being super pale Mexicans lol :]
Hope everyone has a good weekend :] Here is a racecar

Summer plans? Right now, not much except wishing it was over. I didn’t get to go anywhere.
Right now I’m about halfway through watching the first episode of Twin Peaks. I just did not get into it first time around, and I’ve tried to watch it again but usually it doesn’t go well.

Hey tech people and school pranksters (please share if your sub-blog would be so inspired),
My dad is an engineering teacher in high school and has noticed that his kids don’t get too involved unless there’s something in it for them, like robotics competitions.
My suggestion: a school prank. Something that would get school permission but would let the kids feel like they’re getting one over on their classmates. A robot routine at the pep rally, a snack server at lunch, etc. Ideas?

An engine compartment in which everything is female hex (torx I can deal with a bit better) is my greatest nightmare. I don’t know if it’s the way I turn wrenches, but I always seem to round them out within two to three...screwings, without fail.
Edit: Oh gosh, now I’m imagining an interior done in cheap black laminate.

Diary of a Teenage Girl came out and you should go see it because it is a-fucking-mazing .
“Diary of a Teenage Girl [is] failing at the box office because young people won’t go to American independent films. How sad missing out on Diary of a Teenage Girl, so courageous and transgressive in portraying the lively, raunchy, not always healthy sex life of a 15-year-old. There is no male gaze here: a splendid film written and directed by a woman from a novel by a woman, and everything from a female perspective.”

Don’t worry about being late. If i can get Fact Of The Day posted on O-Deck by my own self imposed 8 am eastern deadline I consider that to be a good day. But half the time it’s several hours late and no one seems to care.
I wanted to wait to ask this in the cross thread. I will be attending DragonCon in Atlanta. I was wondering if there were any other folks around here planning to go, and if so, would be interested in organizing some kind of Kinja get together. I’ll be with my friend and his fiance most of the time but i’m sure there will be an hour here or there where i’ll be free. I also have never been to this con so I can’t really suggest good places to meet. Anyway, I was just wondering what people’s thoughts were on that.

There are a bunch of fun youtube videos of rube goldberg type machines that I think they could have fun rigging up. Oh, I know, a friend was telling me about this trashcan robot at a state fair that would follow ‘em around and make jokes and the like and her family thought it was awesome.

I just finished a ten-day forced march back and forth between my inlaws homes and my mother’s house, all back in Connecticut. I guess you could say it was a vacation because my wife and children and I flew there from Seattle, rented a car, and stayed in a hotel and spent thousands upon thousands of dollars doing so. But was it relaxing? No. No it was not.

I went to Finland for an academic conference. Next is California for another conference, I’m presenting this time. Then London to look at a school for my PhD and meet with my potential advisor again.
These aren't vacations, but they're time away from the office and I enjoy them. My work in mental health is so stressful that any time away is good self care.

I went camping last weekend with two of my friends. It was at another friend’s mom’s house. She lives next to a beautiful river in a great spot. Since my other friend (her daughter) was out of town, I called her mom up and did it old-school. “Hi, this is ___, your daughter’s friend. Can I come up to camp on your property this weekend?” She was so gracious about it, it was sweet.
I’m in Portland, and tons of smoke from nearby wildfires engulfed the city for the weekend. It was weird emerging from my house and smelling campfire all around. Apparently a lot of people called 911 so the authorities specifically had to say, “Please don’t call 911 unless you see a fire.”
Still hoping to get a few camping weekends in, but it’s supposed to rain this weekend. Which is great because we obviously need it, but not so great for spending time outdoors.

My text-to-speech reader said “end-e-vor” when it ran into “endevour”. And I thought, ‘what’s an endevor?... is it a creature that eats the last part of things?’
Could that be why nothing is really over?? Because the *endevor* ate everything? : )

Story, well I didn’t do too much this summer. I bought a bike. Also, I vowed to keep my place clean, for the first time since I’ve lived on my own, and that vow is still in effect, has been since late June.
I also had the privilege, like so many other Earthlings, of seeing Pluto up close for the first time, thanks to New Horizons. That of course was July 15.
I gave my first ‘apartment warming’ party, on Tuesday. I had three friends over and I was not expecting them to bring me anything but their company, they brought stuff. I got one of those huge food baskets from one friend, and new fancy beddings from another. And like I said, I didn’t expect any gifts. There were no rules, just turn up, while I supplied the food.

Or a learned person that sees them as people first, and not “kids” - since at that age, at least the intellectual aspect is 100% ‘adult’ (not talking emotional, experiential, wisdom, etc... just brain processing machinery here.) The person who treats them in that different and upfront way, without shying around hard questions, can get them to do almost anything.
Access to adult information, presented as to an adult, is something they crave at that age. All the “polite” and “PC” and “appropriate” way we treat them is something they don’t need - hard data is what they need.
Activity wise, maybe the pranks would work, that’s an old, old tribal method of getting younglings engaged. (It got me engaged back in the 80’s for April 1st stunts at a startup.)

There’s a small symposium (part of a huge conference) that I’ve been going to for like 4 years now and the chair described it as seeing friends once a year.
I haven’t been around London much yet. Took the train down from Edinburgh and geeked out a bit at arriving at King’s Cross ‘cause I spent years in the Harry Potter fandom. Today my mom and I ventured out to the Jewish community in Golder’s Green to stock up on food, so it was a chance to see the underground and the suburbs but not so much London.

I think we may already have tickets for the Tower of London, otherwise it’s definitely on the list. My mom loves big old houses, so we went to the castle (which yes, much history and fantastic views), Holyrood Palace, and Stirling Castle, and I think Buckingham and Windsor are both on the list for London. I’m trying to sneak in a visit to Bletchley Circle ‘cause I almost feel like I have to visit since I’m in computer science, and otherwise it’s mostly museums (which I love).

Sorry if it came across that way - didn’t mean to. Most people consider my ideas too radical and weird, but then they meet the kids I’ve had or the ones that are part of homeschool/mentoring groups or the results of the volunteering at elementary school trips and they can see how the kids become more engaged.
Honestly - I shouldn’t have said anything now that I think about it. It’s a two beer discussion with way too much to talk about. I retract the comment (except about pranks - those really are engaging as long as someone doesn’t let it get mean.)
I’ll leave it at this comment. I can feel the pain of your dad, and everytime I come across a typical high schooler I can hardly even get them to meet my eyes consistently - they almost always look down. That’s not natural in my opinion and getting them engaged is very good work. Good luck.
